  14. <p>   [Text] Peter [St. Petersburg] has started to "glow." It is
  15. polluted by radioactive waste sites; moreover, one of the most
  16. dangerous is situated next to the hard currency hotel
  17. "Pribaltiyskaya."
  18. </p>
  19. <p>   A certain military unit engaged in secret work involving the
  20. use of radioactive substances was long in operation in the
  21. district of Vasilyevskiy Island near Shkiperskiy Channel. The
  22. work has finished and the military have departed, burying the
  23. radioactive waste right there in the city's soil.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>   No less than nine extremely dangerous centers of radioactive
  26. contamination emitting beta-radiation of up to 50,000 particles
  27. per square centimeter per minute, are situated less than 300
  28. meters from the Gulf of Finland. The former authorities
  29. concealed the fact the Vasilyevskiy Island has been made
  30. dangerous to life over an area of almost one hectare.
